Invoicing in Australia
What a Australian invoice has to say on its face
The generator below opens with Australia's own labels, currency and number format already set. First, the part that is not about software.
Required on the document
- The words “Tax invoice”, prominently.
- Your ABN.
- The GST amount, or a statement that the total includes GST.
- The buyer’s identity or ABN once the sale is $1,000 or more.
- The date, your identity, and what was sold.
The one that costs money
This is the one on this page that costs cash immediately. Under the no-ABN withholding rule, a business paying an invoice with no ABN on it is legally required to withhold 47% of the payment and send it to the ATO. Not a fine — 47% of your money, held by someone else, until you sort out a form.
The rate
GST is 10% on taxable sales. Some supplies are GST-free or input taxed.
That is the standard rate as a matter of public record. Whether it is the rate for your work, and whether you are registered at all, are questions about your business — this page does not know, the app does not look it up, and neither will guess.
