Invoicing in South Africa
What a South African invoice has to say on its face
The generator below opens with South Africa's own labels, currency and number format already set. First, the part that is not about software.
Required on the document
- The words “Tax invoice”, “VAT invoice” or “Invoice”.
- Your name, address and VAT registration number.
- The customer’s name and address, and their VAT number once the invoice is over R5,000.
- A serial number and the date of issue.
- The VAT amount, or a statement that the total includes VAT at the standard rate.
The one that costs money
SARS distinguishes a full tax invoice from an abridged one at R5,000. Under it, less is required; over it, the customer’s details are not optional, and an invoice without them cannot support their input claim.
The rate
The standard rate is 15%. Certain supplies are zero-rated.
That is the standard rate as a matter of public record. Whether it is the rate for your work, and whether you are registered at all, are questions about your business — this page does not know, the app does not look it up, and neither will guess.
